Colonel JAN C. NORRIS
Commander, US Army Garrison Fort Hunter Liggett
COL Jan C. Norris hails from Richmond, VA and his previous assignment was as a staff officer on the Joint Staff J6 at the Pentagon.
Prior to the Pentagon, he served as the Commander of the 4th Joint Communications Squadron (Airborne)-Joint Communications Support Element, MacDill AFB in Tampa, FL; and as the Assistant Chief of Staff, G6 for the 311th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) in Los Angeles, CA. He served in Hawaii from 2007-2010 in various key positions as S3-516th Signal Brigade, S3-30th Signal Battalion and Chief of Current Operations for the 311th Signal Command (Theater) at Fort Shafter. His most recent deployment was as Chief, Current Operations for the 335th Signal Command Forward at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait in 2009.
COL Norris has held various positions of responsibility to include one company command and one field grade command as the commandant of the High Tech Regional Training School in Sacramento, CA. Other assignments include, G3 Knowledge Management Officer-I (U.S.) Corps, Signal Officer Stryker Brigade Coordination Cell, both at Fort Lewis, WA; G6 Plans Officer, 8th U.S. Army in Seoul, Korea; Telecommunications Officer, 63rd Regional Support Command G6, Los Alamitos, CA; Signal Officer, 1st COSCOM G6, Fort Bragg, NC; and Platoon Leader, 304th Signal Battalion, Camp Colburn, Korea.
He is a Joint Qualified Officer having served served as both an Active Component (AC) and Active Guard Reserve (AGR) officer in his 25 year career. He graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a bachelor’s degree in Journalism in 1990 and was commissioned in the Army Signal Corps through the Army Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, GA in 1991. He earned a master’s degree in Applied Linguistics Old Dominion University in 1997. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal (w/ Oak Leaf Cluster), the Meritorious Service Medal (w/ Silver Oak Leaf Cluster), the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal and the Army Parachute badge.
He is a graduate of the Army Signal Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the Command and General Staff College, the Force Management Course, the Joint C4 Planner’s Course, Advanced Joint Professional Military Education (JPME II), and the U.S. Army War College with a Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies.
